is a well-known religious poem written by John Donne. You’ll probably recognize the poem by part of the first line: “Death, be not proud…” The poem (and that first line) has been the inspiration for several works in more recent literary history. John Gunther wrote a memoir entitled Death Be Not Proud, which centers around the life of his son who died from a brain tumor as a teenager. The story was portrayed in a 1975 TV movie starring Robby Benson as Johnny Gunther and Arthur Hill as John Gunther. Margaret Edson also used the poem to great dramatic effect in her play Wit.

The poem was also the inspiration for this blog…
